Shepherd of Light
The Story
The shepherd in this piece initially began as a man, but the day I was painting it, a friend unexpectedly sent me a note about a tarot card that she had felt guided to pull for me.
It was St. Brigid. Given that St. Brigid is often depicted with a shepherd’s staff, I immediately knew that this was her painting.
Instead of the traditional staff, I chose to introduce a hag’s torch, a candle made from mullein dipped in wax. This particular choice holds deep personal significance, as I had used one for several months as part of a light ceremony I performed on all four shores of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The act of carrying the flame on those shores felt like a call to follow the light.
The light St. Brigid carries represents the inner light present within each of us. It is this light that shows us the way, guiding us toward our greatest calling, and encouraging us to trust the path ahead, and to embrace the brilliance that lies within us.
